After being hit on the bell by Jayson Tatum’s “ball throw” in Game 1, the Nets had to respond in Game 2, or else they would be under pressure to make their way back to Brooklyn.
In the first half, Steve Nash’s men stepped forward to avoid this disaster scenario. Title on a date (24/40 to shoot, including 6/12 to 3 points), with the momentum of the Kevin Durant-Bruce Brown duo in great shape: 29 points. They are supported by a very good Goran Dragic off the bench, who put 16 points, 7/10 on shots. Progress Pushing force To the net throughout this first period.
Sharp in attack, Brooklyn players in defense are not left out either. Determined to stop Boston finding their attacking rhythm, they rolled up their sleeves in their own half (5 blocks, 5 interceptions). The Celtics are offensively tough (18/37 on shooting, including 6/18 on 3 points), but they’re only -10 in the first half (65-55). They can thank Grant Williams, Al Horford and Daniel Theis, who amassed 32 points, while Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown are more conservative.
But the third quarter strikes Boston’s alarm clock, which you find Pushing force From the end of the first game. Although the Tatum-Brown duo are still struggling offensively, the Celtics still do the job in this playing area, scoring 30 points (at 10/21 to shoot), thanks to their three-piece interior, once again. The gap is gradually narrowing…
Before the final chapter presents a stunning scenario, as in the first game, Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown finally wake up, score the decisive baskets and give the score advantage in Boston. TD Garden is on fire and the Celtics make a difference in defense, because the Nets are only scoring 17 points this fourth quarter (at 5/19 on shot), while “KD” is completely in hiding (0/10 on shot after stopping…).
In the end, Brooklyn only scored 42 points (at 11/36 to shoot) in the second half and on top of that spoiled a 17-unit lead. So Steve Nash’s men lost (114-107) against a Massachusetts franchise shift after returning from the locker room. Not accurate in the first period, the Celtics delivered an impeccable second game, with defensive activity in particular near perfect, in the final quarter.
At 2-0, Ime Udoka’s men have a psychological advantage over their opponents and can approach the rest of the first round in peace!
What to remember
– Boston’s defense over Kevin Durant in the second half. The winger, who finished the match with 27 points (only 4/17 to shoot…), did not score a single basket after the break. The author of 15 units in the first half, and scored his 12 points in the second half exclusively on the free-throw line. Evidence of his aggressiveness, of course, but above all evidence of the Celtics’ defense that bothered “KD” so badly, just as in the first game. SuperstarBoston sent Marcus Smart, Jason Tatum, Al Horford, and Jaylene Brown, and they all succeeded.
– The net sank in the last quarter. After 65 points in the first inning, Brooklyn sank in the second. Especially during this last quarter during which the New York team scored only 17 points, 5/19 on pickups. Like Kevin Durant, who struggled late in the game against a solid Boston defense, the Nets watched helplessly as they crumbled.
– Brooklyn needs Ben Simmons. Sinking nets was, of course, offensive in this Game 2, but their defense wasn’t glorious either. Because of its ever “switch” strategy, Brooklyn was always at a disadvantage against Boston’s interiors, then defended by “smaller” players. Exploiting this volume deficit, Grant Williams, Al Horford and Daniel Theis combined 48 at three points. Now after losing 2-0, the nets are back at the wall and they need Ben Simmons, excellent on the field (and in all positions), to fill the gaps in their defense.
✅ Jaylyn Brown. Like Jason Tatum, he slept on the first half. before gradually gaining momentum during the second period. And the full-back finally signs a convincing game, with several crucial baskets in the final quarter. He accumulated 22 points (9/18), 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.
✅ Payton Pritchard. He used to play for the purposes of high-stakes meetings, and since he’s been in college for four years, the rule has proven invaluable off the bench (10 points and 4 rebounds, in 16 minutes). In the last quarter, he notably planted a “step back,” which blew up the entire TD garden.
✅ Bruce Brown. A very good performance by the Swiss Army Knife curling, who finished the match with 23 points (8/12 to shoot), 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 interception and 2 blocks. Good all over, without being particularly sparkling in any area, he embodies the blue-collar profile that stars like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving need.
✅⛔️ Jason Tatum. mixed match for Superstar from Celtics. His stats sheet is not good (19 points, 5/16), but his overall performance is satisfactory. Because he compensated for a slow attack with an interesting organization (10 assists) and an impeccable defense. Before hitting the net in “money time,” with a few shots felt into the racket.
⛔️ The Durant-Irving duo. 8 out of 31 shots for both, it stings… Kevin Durant scored most of his points with a throw, and what we notice is the lack of outside danger. They are outdone by the Celtics, and neither Irving nor Durant can find shots from distance.
The third game: In Brooklyn, Saturday night to Sunday (1:30).
