Atlanta crushes Charlotte to give itself a chance to finish eighth in the East

Like last year, the Hornets failed to overcome the “play-in” hurdle. And like last year, the Pacers didn’t make the evening heavyweight on the floor of the Hawks (132-103).

Following Trae Young (24 points, 10 assists), decidedly clumsy (8/24 on shots, including 1/7 at 3 points) but a perfect leader of the home group (five more players with more than 10 points), the players didn’t feel Atlanta worried for a moment. Quickly settle into control, thanks to the opponent’s terrible and catastrophic defense, and then relax to the end.

On Charlotte’s part, between this desperate defense, the questionable attitude – as if it were a normal season match – and the outrageous performances of the supposed leaders, this 2021/22 campaign ends brutally, but no less logically.

What to remember

More effective group for Atlanta. Besides the duel between Trae Young and the LaMelo Ball, which was largely won by the former, it is the contribution of the other players to their side that will be examined in this match. The outcome of the races: It was a real massacre, as Young’s assistants enjoyed themselves against the Hornets “defense.” Between Kevin Huerter’s outdoor baskets, Clint Capela’s paint job, Danilo Gallinari’s cleanliness, De’Andre Hunter’s hot shot after the break and Bogdan Bogdanovic’s points off the bench, Charlotte has been untenable, over time.

Charlotte exploded in defense. It’s been months, not to mention years, that the Hornets have settled due to a defense that is too lenient, sometimes bordering on obnoxiousness. And their illnesses in this sector of the game re-emerge even more when adversity increases and the cleaver approaches the matches. Example tonight, with this beating received in Georgia against a much more competitive team and stopped by the big meetings. Unable to hold on defensively, over the course of several successive sequences, James Borrego’s men were opened from far and near Atlanta.

tops/swings

Atlanta holders. Trae Young was well contained by the Hornets, and it was his assistants who seized the opportunity to shine. Thanks to their All-Star point guard’s fine transformations, a knack for creating but also occasionally engrossed in scoring, Kevin Huerter, Danilo Galinari, De’Andre Hunter and Clint Capela, in turn, were able to push comfortably (and surely) their responsible team. In turn, Charlotte did not know where to turn, logically lost track of this part and undergoes a real correction upon arrival.

BJ Washington. While LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier watered in vain, it was PJ Washington (17 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks) who played a vital role for the Hornets. With his outside title, but also his ability to attack the circuit, he allowed his team not to sink to the scoreboard and to stay within a reasonable distance of the Hawks, in the first half. Except that upon returning from the locker room, Charlotte’s interior, like all of his teammates, sank to the power of Atlanta’s collective strike. However, he made a rather attractive face for 24 minutes.

Duo Ball Rosier. Among the three main offensive options of the Hornets, along with Miles Bridges (by the way, he was knocked out), there are holes in the LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier. They could not achieve success in the first half, and somewhat irritated by the referees’ whistles, they were not confident of the evening. However, in the second half, they continued to water excessively, finally putting together… 15/47 in shots (including 6/22 at 3 points), with 8 shot losses! It is difficult, under these circumstances, to have a positive impact on the team’s match, despite the full statistics …

The third quarter of Charlotte. While De’Andre Hunter was clumsy in the first period, he then revived (and ate) after the break, thanks to the spaces the Hornets left in the racket. Put into orbit by Trae Young, he put together a whopping 16 points in just the third quarter, definitively eliminating his opponents in this meeting. In addition to Hunter, James Borrego’s men also fired Jokes of Young and others, on full display, to the point of suffering…42-24 in twelve minutes!
