Long shots, predictions, idle golf bets

The Masters may be over, but the action doesn’t stop for golf buffs as attention now turns to Harbor Town for the 2022 RBC Heritage.

And unlike the Masters, this tournament has been a happy hunting ground for long shots in the recent past. CT Pan, Wesley Bryan, Satoshi Kodaira and Stewart Cink have all won here since 2017, so you can see a winner coming from anywhere on the board. However, it should be noted that this year’s field is exceptionally strong for this tournament with Justin Thomas, Colin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Dustin Johnson, Cam Smith, Shane Lowry and Daniel Berger leading the event.

The presence of these players has created more value at the table and we have already seen a lot of betting support for players like Kevin Kesner, Kevin Na and Se Woo Kim this week.

With the big names and modern middle-class players making big bucks, some players went unnoticed as we head into Thursday morning. Here are five people worth checking out in Harbor Town.

(+5500) Tommy Fleetwood

It’s more of a mid-level bet than a long one, but this number on Tommy Fleetwood is definitely worth considering. The Merseysider has yet to beat the boys this side of the pond and hasn’t been in the winner’s circle since 2019, but he has racked up five European Tour wins to his name.

Except for the WGC Match Play, Fleetwood has finished T22 or better in the last four tournaments and has just finished a T14 performance at the Augusta National.

Fleetwood was in good shape and showed his ability to score in groups. If only he could do it when he’s not already out of the race.

Tom Hogg (+8000)

It’s been a breakout season for Tom Hogg of North Dakota. The Fargo native has one win, one runner-up, three Top 10, and six Top 25 teams in 18 starts in the 2021/22 FedEx Cup campaign. Hoge calmed down recently, but had he continued in this kind of form, that number would have been halved.

Kevin Strelman (+10000)

Kevin Strelman hasn’t played for Augusta National, so he should be well-rested on a tour that matches his profile. A player who can put him off the tee and prepare to look good in the pin, Streelman shouldn’t get himself into too much trouble here, which is a huge plus in a place that punishes wild tee shots. With a pair of top sevens on his last four trips to Harbor Town and three straight 25s in a row this week, Streelman deserves the shot with three-digit chances.

Brian Harman (+10000)

There have been times over the past 18 months or so where Brian Harman has been pretty chalky with half those odds. After a lost masters cut, Harman’s love begins to fade, which is good news for value seekers. A solid racket and a player who can handle deep pitches if his game comes together, Harman ticked several boxes in Harbor Town and had some success here with two top-10 finishes and a 13th-place finish in 2021.

Takumi Kanaya (+25000)

We’ve seen players come out of nowhere to win this tournament and Takumi Kanaya could do the trick this week. Like the courses in its native Japan, Harbor Town is a track that rewards precision mastery. This kind of setup pairs well with Kanaya’s skill set, which is similar to Streelman in that he may not pound the ball, but he will drop it down the fairway constantly. Kanaya has yet to make his mark on the PGA Tour, but has racked up three wins in Japan, so the 23-year-old has shown his ability to keep his cool should he pop up on the leaderboard.
