Former Masters winner Rich Pym believes Rory McIlroy now understands how to play Augusta after his last role in 64.

Rory McIlroy shouldn’t be criticized for his Masters performance and he learned key lessons that could help him win the Augusta National in the future, according to Rich Beam.

It’s funny because I was reading some of the comments on social media on Sunday night, which is probably the stupidest thing I could do, but I did it anyway, and they shot him because he wasn’t in dispute until the last 64th round.

If you turn the numbers and he shoots a 64 in the first round and then shoots a 73 in the last round and loses, would we look at Rory McIlroy’s performance differently?

He obviously didn’t have a swing on Thursday and Friday, no doubt about that. If you watched some of the shots he hit, he was struggling, trying to figure out exactly what his swing was doing.

He put everything together on Sunday, it was absolutely amazing.

Everyone on the field had the same opportunity yesterday as Rory McIlroy did to go out and shoot the 64, however he’s the only one who did, he’s the only one who equaled the Sunday Masters record by shooting the number 64 and finishing with a gleaming vault shot on the 72nd hole.

This guy is just a great golfer, he’s going to go out and win more majors, no doubt in my mind.

Rory can win Augusta after learning important lessons

I just think what he’s learned about his game on Sunday will push him forward and I think he’ll be competing in the big slams a lot this year.

Yes, he has to get off to a better start in the big competitions to move forward – 73 isn’t enough, that’s for sure. He knows it, we know it, he just goes out and does it.

McIlroy says that after 14 years playing in the Masters, he has produced his best runs and will continue to try to win that green jacket.

But I thought what he did on Sunday was totally exciting. I was on the edge of my seat all afternoon watching it, I thought it was cool.

I think everything he learned this week, not just yesterday, is not having an A game and understanding that he has to miss in the right places, because he didn’t miss the right places in the first two days.

I think if he thinks and goes back and looks at it and understands next year that his game plan has to be, when the pin comes back to the left in first place, I should hit him there on the right. Wherever the flag is, you should have a game plan about where those pins are.

He’s a very aggressive player, he’ll always throw flags if he thinks he can hit them, he just needs to understand that you can’t always do that and I think he learned a lot from that yesterday.

One of the highlights of yesterday was the 14th, he missed the left, threw it right before the green, then hit that chip pretty soon. I think there is always something to learn about the Augusta National, and I think he learned a lot yesterday.

Don’t be surprised to see Tiger in a row in St Andrews

Bem was also impressed by Tiger Woods’ return to main action at Augusta and seen enough five-time Masters champions to believe he could claim titles in the future.

When I watched him ride the 18th hole yesterday afternoon, I felt a little suffocated.

If you look at the way he walked there, it was obvious that this guy was in great pain, he was struggling and it wasn’t easy.

You just have to put yourself in his position, what he put into his mind and body this week just to compete, even for only two days let alone four, was absolutely phenomenal.

I think he can win. What he’s going to learn about his golf is that it’s not a game of strength anymore, it’s about precision and dexterity, and I think there’s a lot of room for that at the major tournaments, whether at Augusta National or St Andrews or anywhere else in the future.

I just think the fact that he knows how to play Augusta National, and you don’t always have to be the tallest player to win and compete in Augusta, I think that’s a good opportunity.

But if he can do his body well, at St Andrews, I wouldn’t be at all shocked to see him go out and get into the running on Sunday.

I just think he has a better understanding of where he’s playing and that he just needs to reshape the way he plays the game, what he’s done, he’s done that three or four times already in his career to change coaches, so he’s definitely on the right track to come back.

What are the other majors for this year?

Schaeffler will now be seeking another major success in the PGA Championship from May 19-22, which is being held at Southern Hills Country Club for the first time since Woods won there in 2007, with the next US Open being held at the Country Club in Brooklyn. 16-19 June.

The men’s main season then culminates in the 150th Open from July 14-17, with Woods confirming he intends to play at St Andrews, with all the top teams returning exclusively this year on Sky Sports Golf.
