Cyan teamed up with Mighty Coconut to create a virtual reality course on Myst Island, called Walkabout Mini Golf: Myst.
Austin, Texas-based Mighty Coconut is developing the new 36-hole VR course as an extension of its existing Walkabout Mini Golf VR title. The Myst Tournament will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022. Walkabout Mini Golf: Myst will be a DLC course for the popular VR game.
The course will be available on Meta Quest, Steam and upcoming VR platforms and will feature immersive gameplay with realistic physics, iconic settings, items and puzzle spirit from the Myst saga.
Lucas Martell, executive producer and president of Mighty Coconut, said in an interview with GamesBeat that his team has been consulting with Cyan about development to make Myst Island look right.

“We are able to do much bigger things than you can do on the actual track,” Martell said.
It helps that Cyan has already turned Myst into a 3D adventure in VR. Myst VR debuted in December 2020 on the Oculus Quest 2 headset. But Martell said his team needed to remake the island in the style of Walkabout Mini Golf art. So they will use Myst’s artwork as inspiration for their own title.
The original Myst is a graphic-adventure puzzle video game originally released for the Macintosh PC platform in 1993, which is now approaching its 30th anniversary.
“We all grew up in Mighty Coconut playing Myst, and some of us have rediscovered it over the past couple of years,” Martell said. “It seems a bit sacrilegious to play mini golf on Mist Island. However, at the same time, when we think about where we want to spend time and play mini golf together, Mist Island seems like the perfect thing.
Currently up to five people can play together in a multiplayer room. When designing a multiplayer Myst game, Cyan and Mighty Coconut would be able to work together.
“We’re going to have to call a few things, but overall we try to stay as loyal as possible,” Martell said. “It’s a love letter.”
The only thing Myst allows, Martell said, is adding more puzzle solving to the mini golf experience than other licenses. This will take effect when searching for loose balls.
Hannah Gammell, director of development at Cyan in Mead, Washington, said in an interview that the Cyan team had been a fan of Walkabout Mini Golf before negotiations began. Introduced Meta Cyan and Mighty Coconut.
“We were really excited to hear about the Mighty Coconut,” Jamil said. “We’ve had meetings at Walkabout Mini Golf so it’s very exciting.”
The founders (Rand and Robin Miller) played a virtual reality game.
“It’s also kind of perfect. Because people want to hang out on Mist Island,” she said. “They want to spend time with their friends and family. And people do it over the years anyway, just playing the game. He seems to be the perfect companion for that anyway.” Anyway, I’m so excited.
Mighty Coconut is the entertainment studio behind the top-rated multiplayer game Meta Quest: Walkabout Mini Golf, which in March announced a partnership with Jim Henson to develop Walkabout Mini Golf: Labyrinth.
Basic Walkabout Mini Golf includes eight courses, each with 36 holes (18 in easy mode and 18 in hard mode). Mighty Coconut is subsequently releasing additional individual courses as DLC – three of which have been released so far, with more on the way.
Martell said the Myst Course will be lively, challenging, puzzle-packed and beautiful for players where they can escape, explore, play alone or meet up to four other players in 18 holes in easy mode and 18 holes in hard mode, with iconic mysterious objects, settings and puzzles.
You’ll also be able to find 18 lost balls, take part in a fox hunting expedition and recover a souvenir virtual racket. The Walkabout Mini Golf title has hundreds of thousands of players in more than 40 countries.
Mighty Coconut was launched in 2014 by Martell, who directed the animated short film The Oceanmaker. Myst was the best-selling game of the 20th century. Don Carson, lead art director of Mighty Coconut, is one of the previous Disney imaginations.
“So all the courses have a bit of a theme park idea in terms of design,” Martell said. “It happens to be an amusement park built around a mini golf course.
