GYM is betting on the return of Elder Alvarez, but with a light heavyweight

MONTREAL – Elder Alvarez will be back in the ring, but there are no more questions for him to fight with his weight.

The former world lightweight champion (175 lbs), who will turn 38 in a few days, has decided to play his future in the light welterweights, that is, boxers 200 lbs and under.

This was also a requirement of his promoter, Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), who no longer wanted to see him spend all his energy losing weight during boot camp.

“One of the reasons Eric Lucas retired the first time was because he was tired of being overweight. People have no idea how exhausting it is to have to drop weight, perhaps even more so than the fights themselves,” said Yvonne Michel, head of GYM.

“In his last fights, Elider, he didn’t have more energy anymore, because he left everything underweight. He punched less per round than the average light heavyweight because he had no juice left. In his second fight against (Sergey) Kovalev. , he was not inactive not because he froze, but because he could not give more.

Alvarez (25-2, 13 KOs) will make his debut in this new division on May 5, against an opponent to be revealed soon. His eight-round fight will be the final at the GYM Gala being presented at the Casino de Montréal.

Michel and Alvarez’s coach, Stephane Laroche, is convinced that the Colombian-born boxer’s execution speed will allow him to quickly climb the division ladder, where Sergei Kovalev and Badu Jack, among others, are two former 175-pound boxers developing. , like Montrealer. But there is another aspect that Alvarez will have to deal with: his life outside the ring.

His former coach, Mark Ramsey, had harsh words about him after his knockout loss. In the ninth round of his match against Joe Smith Jr. in August 2020. According to Ramsey, Alvarez didn’t have what it took to continue. Ramsay also left the ship soon after.

Alvarez then tried his luck in Florida under coach Pedro Diaz, but that didn’t work out either. Last October, SOS released Final Thrones, which agreed to take it back, on the condition that it was 100% committed.

“It’s a constant battle for Elider. He noted to Roach that he will have to be in the gym every day as he has been for the past few weeks. He’s starting to show flashes of Elider Alvarez; we’ll need more of him by May 5th. It’s very encouraging and if he continues to be.” That streak by then we’ll see an Eleader who will be happy, as he won’t be spending two months of camp trying to go from £200 to £175. It’s very encouraging and very motivating over the next few weeks.

“You have to put yourself in his shoes a bit: He suffered a bit of a sporting depression that went from champion and world champion to losing his belt, before he was fired. By Joe Smith. He has been in professional boxing for several years after going to the Olympics (2008) as an amateur: It’s a long walk. He’s been tired and needed that rest. In the past few years, he hasn’t had a chance to spend a few weeks with the same weight working on his boxing skills. He’s been struggling to gain weight. It’s very difficult both physically and psychologically. Now that’s a settled issue.” .

“I’m very motivated, I wanted to get back into the ring quickly. But I’m not doing it to prove anything to anyone: I’m doing it for myself,” confirmed Alvarez, who doesn’t think he’s too old to embark on this new adventure. (…) I still have it Two years into my contract with GYM, the only promotional company I’ve worked with, and I wanted to take full advantage of them. They are loyal to me, I want to be loyal to them.

Alvarez added, “I decided to work on myself. After things didn’t work out with Pedro Diaz, Stephane Laroche gave me the opportunity to work with him. I’m grateful. I’m now full in the gym. I love working out. (…) I’m fine in my head now.

On this May 5 card, Walter Waits will get Matthew German (20-2-1, 9 KOs) and Mazlum Akdeniz (16-0, 8 KOs) in play for 10 rounds. GYM aims to move both boxers to the top 15 in the world rankings by the end of 2022.

Their opponents and the rest of the map will be revealed in the coming days.
